Black Mountain Remembrance Sunday Memorial Walk
Sunday 9th November 2025, 08:30hrs start
Join us this Remembrance Day for an iconic guided walk to the World War II Wellington Bomber (MF509) aircraft crash site in the Black Mountain range of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Wellington Bomber MF509 crashed on 20th November 1944, with the tragic loss of all six Canadian crew members on board. The aircraft wreckage remains there to this day, and this walk will take you to the crash site on Remembrance Sunday in memory of the sacrifice made by so many during times of war.
Walk description
Starting early (8:30am) to ensure we reach the crash site in time for 11am, the walk starts from the village of Glyntawe on the western side of the Brecon Beacons park. You’ll climb past the Dan yr Ogof show cave and into open access land towards Castell y Geifr. We’ll walk along well-marked paths before heading west over rough ground, toward the Carreg Goch summit at 558m.
We’ll stop at the Wellington Bomber crash site to see the memorial and hold a minute’s silence at 11am.
Our route then takes us over the wild and rocky terrain of the Black Mountain range to a series of hidden lakes, where we’ll stop for lunch along the route. We’ll continue to explore the wild and open terrain to Carreg a’r Gap, before descending to a waterfall and onto Pwll yr Cawr sink hole.
The final part of this spectacular walk takes us north above Dan yr Ogof caves and back down to Glyntawe for a well-earned drink in the Gwynn Arms.
The important stuff
This 10-kilometre walk covers rough, rocky, and boggy ground.
In total, we’ll climb 556m of ascent.
As an intermediate hike, it requires a good level of fitness.
You’ll need sturdy walking boots, warm layers, and waterproof clothing.
Due to the terrain, it is not suitable for dogs.
You’ll need to bring your own packed lunch.
Start time - 08:30am.
